Masters 2017 superlatives: Thursday at Augusta National

The best of the best from Thursday at the Masters:

SHOT OF THE DAY

With the early-morning winds gusting, Daniel Summerhays nearly aced the 155-yard, par-3 12th hole, the same Golden Bell that foiled Jordan Spieth a year ago. Summerhays knocked an 8-iron over Rae’s Creek within a foot and tapped in for birdie. It would have been the first ace on No. 12 since 1988.

HOLE OF THE DAY

The 530-yard, par-5 15th

Firethorn and the blustery conditions wreaked havoc on a couple of players, most notably Spieth (3-over 75 in Round 1) and Billy Hurley III (75). Spieth made a quadruple-bogey nine while Hurley took a triple-bogey 8. For the day, No. 15 yielded 14 birdies, 57 pars, 15 bogeys, three double bogeys and four of the dreaded others.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“I’m surprised. He must have bruised himself pretty badly. He hasn’t got a big bum like me. He would have been all right, you see.”

– 1988 Masters champion Sandy Lyle after hearing World No. 1 Dustin Johnson withdrew from the tournament with a back injury after falling down stairs Wednesday
